Military Vessel in Patong BayJust some update from Phuket: everything is business as usual. No plane delays, no military in the streets, the dealers in Phuket selling their fake Rolex’s, ‘branded’ T-Shirts and Suits like every other day.

The only difference is a small military vessel anchoring in the ‘famous’ Patong Bay, but patrolling up and down every half hour.

TV Channels (BBC, CNA, CNN) are up and running again since this morning and are reporting in a normal manner.

In Bangkok, most people seem to support the coup, as some folks are on the streets with banners. Updated eyewitness news from Bangkok can be found here.

Some of you may have found the site already in my Links: www.overlandtours.de, this is my good friend and ex-colleague Steffen, with whom I worked several years (6,7 or 8? Oh my!) in Germany and Singapore, when we both were still employed.

He is currently on his way to India, with a couple of old, but colourful ‘Bundeswehr‘ (german army) trucks and half a dozen people on motorbikes. They passed already Austria, Croatia, Slovenia, Albania, Greece, Turkey, Iran – currently trying to pass through Pakistan. It’s kind of like a serviced journey, with some experienced travellers organizing the whole trip for the others. The organizers planned the whole route over the last months, took/take care of the places to stay overnight (safe places for camps and hostels only from case to case), border crossings, Visa management and shopping for common cooking.

Crocodile Hunter Steve IrwinWhat a tragic death! While filming a new documentary called “Ocean’s Deadliest”, ‘Crocodile Hunter’ Steve Irwin was today fatally pierced in the chest by a stingray barb, while diving off Queensland‘s Great Barrier Reef.

“He came on top of the stingray and the stingray’s barb went up and into his chest and put a hole into his heart,” said Stainton, who was on board Irwin’s boat at the time.

Crew members aboard the boat, ‘Croc One’, called emergency services in the nearest city, Cairns, and administered CPR as they rushed the boat to nearby Low Isle to meet a rescue helicopter. Medical staff pronounced Irwin dead when they arrived a short time later, Stainton said.

The travel bug did bite again, so we decided to go on a 12 day trip to Camiguin, an island south of Cebu in the Philippines. Having visited Boracay, Malapascua, Bantayan, Cebu, Cabilao and Bohol already – thinking about the fine ‘Tanduay’ Rum and countless Karaoke bars, makes the mood swinging in holiday tunes already. Thank god for Tiger Airways! ;-)

Just 2 years ago a return trip from Manila was about SGD 700 for one person, these days 2 persons can fly return for less than SGD 500. Okay, it’s Clark Base instead of Manilas notorious Ninoy Aquino airport, but that even sounds like a revelation!
