Crossroads in Life - you might come out somewhere!Do you sometimes get melancholic and think about lost chances and past adventures? Wonder how things could have turned for you, if you would just have taken the other turn at one of life’s crossroads?

After ‘The Eagles’ – Don Henley wondered that as well some day in 1984 and came up with that great song the ‘Boys of Summer’. Sometimes this song is just in my head. You can hear it over and over again.

Don said about it, that “(The song) was a look back of the failure of some of the dreams we had in the sixties, some the idealism gone bad. People love nostalgia, it has that yearning, pining thing about it that we people with Irish blood always have. We’re pining for something, we don’t know what it is, but we’re pining for it anyway.”

The best thing is you don’t have to be Irish or relate to the lyrics of something lost, being it a relationship or else. It even can help you to see things in a different perspective. Missed chance, lost love – sure! But what if it was the right decision in the end?

What if you would be there right now? Think about it. With that girl? That job? In your owned house, with the mortgage, 2 kids and a limousine and a 2 seater in the double garage? All that baggage but unhappy in your head and soul? Asking yourself what else you probably could have achieved. What road you could have traveled, what country visited, what language learned, what exotic food eaten, what life lesson learned. It could be all fine – or not.

That is what this song always will remind me – to just try something new and interesting, even though there is a risk. If I try, I might be disappointed a short time. If I don’t try, I will be wondering and might be disappointed the rest of my life. So try out something new today! The road less traveled. Chosing between two evils the one you haven’t tried yet.

Just think about, what could have been and what not. Regret a decision? Don’t wait too long to correct it or change your life. There is only so much (better: so little) of it. And we all don’t know, if we get a second chance in another life.

So, it’s probably good to lean back from time to time, grab a pint of Ben & Jerry’s Cherry Garcia Ice Cream, listen to some nice song and shed a tear or two – about missed chances and right or wrong decisions. After all – life goes on – and usually for the better! No? ;-)

Anyway, in case you don’t know the song, here are some interesting song facts – and here are the lyrics:

The timeless Ray Ban Wayfarers SunglassesNobody on the road
Nobody on the beach
I feel it in the air
The summer’s out of reach
Empty lake, empty streets
The sun goes down alone
I’m drivin’ by your house
Though I know you’re not at home

But I can see you –
Your brown skin shinin’ in the sun
You got your hair combed back and your sunglasses on, baby
And I can tell you my love for you will still be strong
After the boys of summer have gone

I never will forget those nights
I wonder if it was a dream
Remember how you made me crazy?
Remember how I made you scream
Now I don’t understand what happened to our love
But babe, I’m gonna get you back
I’m gonna show you what I’m made of

I can see you –
Your brown skin shinin’ in the sun
I see you walkin’ real slow and you’re smilin’ at everyone
I can tell you my love for you will still be strong
After the boys of summer have gone

Out on the road today, I saw a Deadhead sticker on a Cadillac
A little voice Inside my head said, “Don’t look back. You can never look back.”
I thought I knew what love was
What did I know?
Those days are gone forever
I should just let them go but –

I can see you –
Your brown skin shinin’ in the sun
You got that top pulled down and that radio on, baby
And I can tell you my love for you will still be strong
After the boys of summer have gone

I can see you –
Your brown skin shinin’ in the sun
You got that hair slicked back and those Wayfarers on, baby
I can tell you my love for you will still be strong
After the boys of summer have gone

I need to hear the melody. Once you published a poem for a day or so and then it was gone…it was beautiful. I like to see the world through someone else’s poetry. Thanks.

I am like you Chris, I always take the risk – I don’t want to regret not having tried something when I am old and gray. So I would rather risk something and lose, therefore knowing it is lost, than to never risk and never WIN!

Hey Chris, I found you by way of Digital Nomad. You have a great blog and I also love this song! It has always meant the same for me about the lost or squandered opportunities. Thanks for the reminder to take chances!

I love that song, always have. And now, thanks to you, it will be playing in my head for the rest of the day. ;-)

And your post begs the question: You okay?

That song makes me want to be riding on the back of a classic BMW bike along a country road at night, under the stars, with a warm wind blowing back my hair still wet from skinny-dipping in a ice-cold spring-fed lake. Love it. I’m going to go away and feel all wistful now…

I missed a lot of chances but no regret about it. There were missed opportunities but that’s a fact of life…
